Understanding Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a critical 7-month window when you first become eligible for Medicare. This is the BEST time to enroll because you have guaranteed-issue rights for Medigap plans without health questions.
Your 7-Month IEP Window
Months 1-3
3 months BEFORE you turn 65
Month 4
The month of your 65th birthday
Months 5-7
3 months AFTER you turn 65
✓ Why Enroll During IEP?
- • No medical underwriting for Medigap
- • Cannot be denied coverage
- • Cannot be charged more for health conditions
- • Access to all available plans
✗ Missing Your IEP Can Mean:
- • Medical underwriting required
- • Possible denial of coverage
- • Higher premiums based on health
- • Limited plan options
Note: If you're still working and covered by an employer plan when you turn 65, you may have a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
